Dr. Joan Guitart

Professor of Dermatology and Pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg Medical School. Director of the Dermatopathology Unit, Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic and Co-Director of the NIH-funded Skin Disease Research Center Pathology Core.

Dr. Guitart obtained his medical degree from the University of Barcelona, followed by residency training in dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology at the University of Illinois in Chicago and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His research and clinical interests at Northwestern University have largely focused on cutaneous lymphomas ranging from epidemiology to clinical trials and pathology studies.

He is a leader in the field of cutaneous lymphomas and served as President of the International Society of Cutaneous Lymphomas. He has also been the President of the Chicago Dermatological Society and Chair of the Scientific Assembly Committee of the American Academy of Dermatology. 

Among his over 300 publications, there are some of the largest series and most comprehensive studies related to folliculotropic cutaneous lymphomas, cutaneous gamma-delta lymphomas, CD8+ aggressive epidermotropic lymphomas, subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma, marginal zone lymphomas, and lymphomatoid papulosis among others. This work has resulted in his collaboration with WHO in redefining the classification of cutaneous lymphomas.  More recently, his team has been exploring the genomic landscape and microbiome of various cutaneous T and B cell lymphomas and microbiome. 

He lives in Evanston, IL with his wife Gerta and is a music aficionado and avid outdoors recreational sailor, skier, biker, and hiker.


Dr. KJ Busam

Dr. Busam is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Director of Dermatopathology and Immunohistochemistry at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).  He graduated from the medical school of the University of Freiburg in Germany. He completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and subsequently a fellowship in Dermatopathology at the combined Harvard program.

Dr. Busam’s academic work has largely focused on improvements in the diagnostic accuracy and prognosis of melanocytic tumors and other skin cancers through clinicopathologic correlations and ancillary methods, including immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and sequence analysis. He leads the pathology core of the NIH-funded InterMel international melanoma research consortium. Collaborative efforts with colleagues locally, nationally, and internationally have led to more than 400 publications in peer-reviewed journals. For his academic contributions, he received the Founders Award of the American Society of Dermatopathology in 2021.

Dr. Busam has co-edited or contributed chapters to leading textbooks in melanocyte tumor pathology, general Dermatopathology, and the WHO skin tumor book. He has also organized or contributed to many educational courses or seminars. He serves on the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR) expert committee for melanoma and chairs the ICCR expert committee for Merkel cell carcinoma. He is the immediate past president of the American Society of Dermatopathology.
